Instruments with keys have a keyboard that we play by pressing keys with our fingers. This group includes instruments that can generate sound in quite different ways. Pianos are cordophones (strings make the sound), accordions are aerophones (air excites the sound of metal tabs), electronic keyboards and synthesizers have an electronic sound source that can be analog or digital.

Electronic keyboards have the following subgroups:
- keyboards for home use,
- learning and semi-professional keyboards,
- synths, arrangers and sound modules,
- MIDI keyboards.
Digital pianos are classified as follows:
- stage piano (portable electric pianos),
- electric or digital pianos (they have a pedal base, the same as a classical piano),
- electric or digital pianos with accompaniment (arranger station functions added).
digital pianos are electronic instruments with keys that are used as an alternative to classical acoustic pianos. They use synthesized emulation or sampled piano sound recordings as a sound source. Stage piano is a portable version of a digital piano without a base, and often these models have built-in sounds of other instruments in addition to the piano, sounds like analog synthesizers, wind instruments, brass, strings, percussion, etc.
Electric or digital pianos are often designed to even look very similar to acoustic pianos with included base and pedals, the same as an acoustic piano. Most of them focus on the sound of acoustic pianos, but they usually have also a couple of sounds of electric pianos (Rhodes, Wurlitzer, etc.) and maybe an organ, harpsichord, etc. to spice things up with regular piano practice. More added sounds and an arranger station with automatic accompaniment have built-in electric or digital pianos with accompaniment.
Digital pianos are very popular as an alternative to acoustic pianos due to their smaller size and weight, lower price and the fact that they can be heard silently with headphones. Due to ever-improving technology in sound synthesis or sampling, ever-improving mechanical weighting solutions and realistic key reflectivity, and ever-improving sound reproduction via an internal speaker system, the difference in feel between digital and acoustic pianos is rapidly diminishing.
Piano accessories include piano benches and chairs for keyboardists. For the most part, all chairs and benches are height-adjustable, and some piano benches even have a hydraulic adjustment.
Accordions are divided into piano and button (diatonic and chromatic) accordions. The piano accordion is the most widespread, although the diatonic accordion is also very popular in our country due to its widespread use in folk music. The chromatic accordion is less common in Slovenia, but it is mostly (similar to the piano) in use as a concert accordion and in various smaller ensembles and accordion orchestras.
Accordions are also available in a variety of sizes, so even the younger ones are not disadvantaged. In any case, each student will need an instrument of smaller size on the first steps in music school, depending on his / her growth. Along with the size, the number of bass buttons also changes; so we know 48, 60, 72, 80, 96 and 120 bass accordions.
