The legendary Shure SM57 is exceptional for musical instrument pickup and vocals. With its bright, clean sound and contoured frequency response, the SM57 is ideal for live sound reinforcement and recording.
The SM57 has an extremely effective cardioid pickup pattern that isolates the main sound source while minimizing background noise. In the studio, it is excellent for recording drums, guitar, and woodwinds. Outstanding performance, reliability, and application diversity make this "workhorse" the choice of performers, producers, and sound engineers worldwide.
The Shure SM57 microphone first gained its reputation not in musical performance venues, but during presidential speeches in the United States, starting from 1965. There were indeed two SM57s, equipped with a windscreen, on the lecterns of various American presidents. Its directionality offers clear and precise voice capture in all circumstances.
If the Shure SM57 is now a huge classic on stage and in studios, it's primarily due to its versatility. In the studio, it's ideally used for recording all kinds of instruments, acoustic or from amplifiers. On stage, it's used for capturing spoken or sung voices. Motörhead's singer, Lemmy Kilmister, used it all the time.
Like many Shure microphones, the SM57 benefits from a robust construction capable of withstanding all the most difficult situations on stage. The SM57 is known for withstanding significant shocks, such as drumstick hits when the drummer accidentally strikes the microphone. You can be sure that your SM57 will accompany you for many years, through many tours. The SM57 is also capable of capturing high-volume sound sources; it was actually designed for such situations
When looking closely at the frequency response of the SM57, one notices that it is not linear. Below 200 Hz, low frequencies are suppressed to eliminate buzzing interference. There are peaks at 2 kHz and 6 kHz to enhance the transparency and clarity of the signal, and dips at 7 kHz and 8 kHz to, this time, reduce the "harshness" of the audio signal.
